One of the most important principles of chess improvement is that training should always be more challenging than actual tournament play. While some coaches believe that training should closely simulate tournament conditions, I strongly believe that effective training should go beyond them. The goal of training is not simply to repeat what happens in a game but to develop skills that make tournament positions feel easier to handle.
A great example comes from athletics. Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt did not train under comfortable conditions. He often ran in sand, pushed weighted sleds, and performed strength exercises that were much harder than sprinting in a race. These difficult training methods increased his speed, endurance, and power. When competition day arrived, running on a normal track without extra resistance felt much easier.
The same principle applies perfectly to chess.
Many players solve only easy puzzles, analyse positions for a few minutes, or stop calculating as soon as they find one reasonable move. While this may feel productive, it does little to improve their real playing strength. Tournament games often present difficult positions where the best move is hidden several variations deep. A player who has never trained to calculate deeply will struggle under time pressure.
During training, players should deliberately challenge themselves. Instead of calculating three or four moves ahead, they should try to calculate six, eight, or even ten moves when possible. Instead of spending five minutes on a difficult position, they should invest twenty or thirty minutes trying to understand every important variation. This develops calculation, visualization, patience, and confidence.
Another important aspect is analysing without immediately using an engine. Chess engines are excellent learning tools, but they should be used only after making a serious personal effort. Independent analysis strengthens critical thinking and teaches players to trust their own judgment. Once the analysis is complete, the engine can be used to verify ideas and identify mistakes.
Training should also expose players to positions that are more difficult than those they usually encounter in tournaments. Complex tactical puzzles, challenging endgames, unclear strategic positions, and calculation exercises force the brain to work harder. Over time, these difficult exercises become familiar, and the player's overall analytical ability improves significantly.
As a coach, I encourage my students to go as deeply as possible into every position. At first, they find it mentally exhausting. However, after weeks and months of disciplined practice, deep analysis becomes their new normal. They begin to calculate more accurately, recognize hidden resources, and evaluate positions with greater confidence. Most importantly, they learn to think faster because their minds have become accustomed to handling complex calculations.
This approach also builds mental toughness. Tournament games involve pressure, uncertainty, and fatigue. Players who have trained under demanding conditions are far less likely to panic when faced with difficult decisions. Instead of fearing complexity, they embrace it because they have experienced even greater challenges during training.
Training is not about finding quick answers. It is about stretching your limits every day. Every difficult puzzle solved, every long calculation completed, and every deeply analysed game increases your capacity to think like a stronger player.
In the long run, the purpose of training is not merely to prepare for the next tournament but to transform the player. When training consistently demands more than competition, tournament games begin to feel manageable. Difficult positions become familiar, confidence grows naturally, and performance improves steadily. True chess improvement comes from making practice harder than the battle itself.
