Structured 4-Week Progressive Jacob Aagaard–Style Training Plan

Here is a Structured 4-Week Progressive Jacob Aagaard–Style Training Plan, specially designed for academy students (1400–2000 level).

Inspired by the training philosophy of Jacob Aagaard and his series Grandmaster Preparation.

This version increases difficulty gradually and builds calculation stamina week by week.

♟ 4-Week Progressive Calculation Program

Training Days: 6 days per week
Daily Time: 60–90 minutes
Main Focus: Thinking discipline, candidate moves, deep calculation

🔹 WEEK 1 – Building Structure & Discipline

Theme: Learn how to think correctly

Daily Structure (60 min)

  • 15 min: Medium calculation positions (2–3 positions)

  • 15 min: Candidate move listing practice

  • 15 min: Visualization drills (blindfold piece movement)

  • 15 min: Review & error discussion

Coaching Focus:

  • Teach students to always list 2–3 candidate moves

  • No moving pieces rule

  • Stop impulsive moves

Goal: Develop structured thinking habit.

🔹 WEEK 2 – Increasing Depth & Accuracy

Theme: Calculate deeper and evaluate final positions

Daily Structure (75 min)

  • 25 min: 2 difficult positions (20 min each max)

  • 20 min: Endgame calculation (pawn races, rook endings)

  • 15 min: Write full variations

  • 15 min: Compare and self-analysis

Coaching Focus:

  • Students must evaluate final position clearly (“better for white because…”)

  • Train them not to stop calculation too early

Goal: Improve depth (3–5 moves ahead accurately).

🔹 WEEK 3 – Complex & Practical Decision Making

Theme: Multiple candidate moves & unclear positions

Daily Structure (90 min)

  • 30 min: 1 very difficult position (Aagaard-style struggle)

  • 20 min: Attacking calculation (forcing lines first)

  • 20 min: Defensive resource training

  • 20 min: Error classification

Coaching Focus:

Ask after every mistake:

  • Missed candidate move?

  • Visualization error?

  • Evaluation mistake?

Goal: Improve resilience in messy positions.

🔹 WEEK 4 – Tournament Simulation & Stamina

Theme: Think like in a classical game

3 Days: Deep Simulation

  • 1 classical position

  • 20 minutes per move (3–4 critical moves)

  • Write full calculation tree

2 Days: Advanced Endgame Calculation

  • Technical positions

  • Precise calculation only

1 Day: Full Reflection Session

  • Review entire month

  • Identify recurring weaknesses

  • Individual feedback

Goal: Build calculation stamina and confidence.

🎯 Academy Implementation Tips (For You as Coach)

Since you train competitive students:

✔ Divide students into rating groups
✔ Encourage written calculation sheets
✔ Weekly evaluation discussion
✔ Reward best thinking process, not fastest solver
✔ Track improvement in calculation accuracy

Expected Results After 4 Weeks

  • Reduced blunders

  • Clearer candidate selection

  • Deeper calculation (5–7 moves in forcing lines)

  • Better tournament performance
