Welcome to the dynamic French defense universal system. I have been playing French defence from more than 25 years. Its a fantastic replay for e4. In this post I will share some of my secrets too.
French defence is a nice way to face e4, e4, e6, d4, d5 will give solid pawn structure and dynamic counter attacking chances.
In this post we will analyze the tarrasch universal system variation in French defence.
1.e4 e6
2.d4 d5
3.Nd2 Nf6
Another similar kind of a position is
1.e4e6
2.d4 d5
3.Nd2 Nf6
4.Bd3 c5
5.e5
But the most common continuation here is
1.e4e6
2.d4d5
3.Nde Nf6
4.e5 Nd7
It is the most difficult pawn structure
Blacks 2 main breaks are c5 and f6
5.Bd3 c5
It is so important to breakout in the french with c5 and f6. Because you are more cramped, you need to play agressive pawn breaks. In this variation I am going to show you another pawn option.
Here what is our main targets e5 and d4. d4 is more relevant , because your pawn is attacking
6.C3 Nc6
Increasing the pressure
7. Nf3
There is a huge difference between Ne2 and Nf3. What are the advantages of Nf3. It can come to Ng5, the other knight can come to Nb3 or the main Nf1 and Ng3 to move towards kingside.
..7Be7
8.0-0
Here castling king side is not a good idea for black. All the white pieces are looking at black king side. Black king in the middle looks safe and in future you can castle queenside.
..8g5
g5 is the crazy pawn break black can use to destroy white's center pawn formation. What can white do here, we are going to play g4. If white didn't give attention and play a3 we will play g4 the knight will go to e1 and I will prefer to play h5 to prevent queen take g4 before cxd4.
How does the white defend the center pawn formation. The whole point of g4 idea is to collapse the center. White can no longer defend the center pawn formation.
White has to do something about this. If white play g4 , the g pawn is a body guard for the king. Moving it will hurt the king in the future.
9.g4 h5
10 h3 hxg4
11. hxg4 Qb6
12.Qa4 cxd4
13.cxd4 a6
Black have to concern about the move dxc5 in the 9th move. White is trying to open lines. Your king is little bit exposed in e8.
Best continuation for black is g4 one of the benefits of the whites last move is knight can go to d4. The best option for black is Ncxe5 , white can play Bc2. If white play Bishop to e2 the Bishop is very passive the game will continued like
9.cxd5 g4
10 Nd4 Ncxe5
11 Be2 Nxc5
12Bxg4 Bd7
13 Bh3 Qc7
14 Qh5 Ng6
15 g3 0-0-0
Its a very nice attacking position for black, e4 Bishop to e2 is not a good move Bishop to b5 is another option Bxc5
You should also note that black is a pawn up in this line. One of the main idea for black is if white play Re1, now you can play a move like Qf6 This is a very good square for the queen.
One of the best continuation for white is f4. This is the key points you should watch out for. f4 is very good idea for white. White is trying to open up the center and looking for a counter attacking chances
In response to f4 don't enpassant. it will open the F-file and very strong attack for white.
You have to close the lines, a good way to do this is Nc6 using the oin in d4 and something like Bxc6 bxc6, qxg4 qf6. This is a key square for the queen. Nf3 to defend d4 knight Bishop to a67 we need to castle queen side in this variations Re1 0-0-0
You can use g file to attack, you have 2 Bishops, and more center pawns.
If white play the good move Bc2 then Nxc5 ,f4 Nc6
Qxg4 e5 Nf5 e4
We are using our center pawns to close down opponent pieces. Qgh5 Bxf5 we can try to exchange to go for the end game as we have central pawns if they avoids will castle queen side.
1. e4 e6
2.d4 d5
3.Nd2 Nf6
4.e5 Nd7
5.Bd3 c5
6.c3 Nc6
7.Nf3 Be7
8.0-0 g5
